As I started looking at prospective employers, I was very much undecided on which industry would best fit me. I had previously spent several enjoyable years working in software development, but I felt I was missing out on the opportunity to develop my own business knowledge offered by a career in strategic consulting. When I learned more about APT, and the APM role in particular, it was clear I didn’t have to choose one or the other. APT product management is tasked with designing software for the decision makers at the world’s top companies. As a result, I’m able to spend every day immersed within the software development process, while also shaping how businesses leaders can make better decisions. With APT offering the best of both worlds, it was an easy decision.
One of the great things about my job is that no two days are the same. As an APM, you can spend one day working with engineers to hash out the details of a new feature being designed and spend the next working with business consultants on how to prioritize which features we build in the next release. Additionally, I also have the opportunity to collaborate with sales and marketing in an effort to translate the value of our product.
The day to day variation in my work allows constant exposure to different parts of our organization and requires understanding the challenges and goals of clients across multiple different industries. As a result, my daily responsibilities create phenomenal personal growth opportunities, while also being enjoyable and fulfilling.
When possible, I love the chance to ski back home in Colorado. Weekend trips are slightly difficult from D.C., however. Luckily, there’s plenty to do in D.C. in the meantime. From Nationals baseball games to music venues blocks from the Capitol building, the city provides great options for the huge base of young graduates in the area.
I also enjoy the chance to play golf (poorly) before work when possible, or squash and tennis (equally poorly) after work. On weekends, New York, Charlottesville, and Philly are just a train ride away when I feel exploring somewhere else.
